The Bunnies Have Arrived

by @ 6:15 pm on October 8, 2011.

On Friday we went to the Springs Folk Festival. We were gone most of the day and I didn’t get to check the rabbits again till almost dark. But lo and behold, a nest full of squirming pink kits. I thought I counted 10 but it was getting dark and cool so I didn’t mess much.

Of course the doe decided to have them in the nest under the feeder. I thought really, really hard about leaving them there. The folks on the Rabbit Talk Forum suggested moving the whole nest into the nest box. I really debated hard wether to listen or not, and in the end figured all those kits were not going to fit in that little space under the feeder as they grew. So I went ahead and moved the nest. I’m not sure if that was wise or not, as all day I’ve been moving kits to the back of the nest from where they’ve squirmed to the front. At least we’re in a warm spell, which increases the odds. Anyway, I got an accurate count of 11 kits. As of my last check an hour ago, all 11 were still alive. So hopefully the doe will accept the move and keep them well fed. I really do think these are all one big litter from one doe. The other doe shows no signs of nest building yet. While it’s possible it’s two combined litters, I’m inclined to believe the second doe bred a little later and is still due. Will just have to wait and see what happens on that one. But fingers crossed, all these babies will survive and we can feast at Christmas. 😛
