Katie's Journal

Gypsy was our dog before we had kids. She was a Border Collie mix, and was born under a corn crib. The owner was giving the pups away. When Emily’s horse died, I got Gypsy as a replacement love object. Emily and Gypsy bonded completely. Gypsy knew what Emily wanted before Emily said anything. They were best friends. They knew each other’s body language. But I also think Gypsy could understand English perfectly.

Then along came the Kevin. Gypsy had grown up without kids, so she had no idea what that little midget with the Frankenstein walk was all about. She tolerated Kevin more than anything else. But she never bit, or growled, or threatened him in any way.

And then came a Gelfling – Katie. Gypsy had raised Kevin, and now she had to do it all over again. This time she was better with the midget thing. She had seen it before. Also, Katie approached her a little differently than Kevin, as can be seen in a comparison of the pictures above.

Gypsy wasn’t much on looks, but she made up for it in brains. Gypsy was undoubtedly the smartest dog we ever owned. She was as good a friend as Emily ever had.
