All summer I’ve been hoping to get a successful hatch of something. I really wanted ducks, but the stupid hound dog kept finding and eating the duck eggs. After 3 (or was it 4?) good attempts I think my duck is done for the year.

I had one chicken go broody this year, one of my barred rocks. She made a good go of her first attempt, but it was in the calf barn under the steps to the hay loft, and the calves managed to knock the steps out and crunch her nest. Her next attempt was in the hay loft, and she successfully hatched out 3 chicks. It was hard to get pictures as mama hen was being a very serious mama hen.

I have one black chick with a white spot on his head, one solid back chick, and one solid grey-ish chick. After reading this really good article on sex-linked chicks, I think crossing the rock with my blue copper maran rooster does result in sex-links. And from that, I believe I have 2 hens and 1 rooster. I’m further guessing one hen is a blue, 1 is a black. If I understand correctly then the rooster will be barred but the hens will not. I’m excited to see how they turn out!
