Sami’s Ride

by @ 7:33 pm on August 30, 2012.

I’m so proud of my girl. She fell off a horse and got right back on. Literally.

Our neighbor has three kids. Her oldest two started back to school last week so with just Sami and her youngest I have enough horses for us to go out riding. She and her son rode Jim while I ponied Sami on Banner from Boniface. Banner did better this time at not being an ornery little pony.

We headed down the road a ways. I wasn’t looking at Sami at the time but all of a sudden there was a commotion and Sami starts to cry. I think what happened was that Banner slipped a step off the road into the ditch and lurched. When she did Sami went sideways and in an error that was my fault and I feel terrible about, the whole saddle slipped to the side (I didn’t get the girth tight enough).

I picked Sami up and checked she was in one piece. She seemed okay so I asked if she wanted to ride with mommy. No. Did she want mommy to walk beside her for a while? No. I put her back on Banner, got back on Boniface and off we went.

We hadn’t made it far when Ern caught up to us. He said there was a nasty pop up storm headed for us. So he took the kids (Sami screamed more at having to stop riding than she did falling off) and Bobby and I hot-footed it for home. We thought about stopping to take refuge at dad’s, but gave it a try to get home. We didn’t quite make it – about the bottom of the drive the downpour started. We were both soaked by the time we got back up the hill to the barn. Even so, it was the most fun I’ve had on a ride in a long time.
