Draft Field Day

by @ 8:46 am on October 3, 2005.

Last Saturday (September 24, 2005) I took Caleb to the Fall Field Day, hosted by the WV Draft Horse and Mule Association. As I’ve said, he’s still only ground driving, but I thought it would be good for him to get out and see the world a bit. The Field Day was held only about 10 minutes from the stable, so it seemed as good a place as any to take him. Field Days are held both Spring and Fall. I took a bunch of pictures at the Spring event, which can be seen here. I didn’t get as many pictures taken at the Fall event since I was busy with Caleb a lot, but a few came out nicely. Someone had a lovely set of three grey Percherons:

And here’s a nice team of Belgians:

A number of people came to admire Caleb, and a few old timers took him for a test drive. Their assessment? “He’ll be all right”. I reckon that’s about as complimentary as these old folks tend to get. Here’s a photo of the president of the association taking Caleb around:

Toward the end of the day, I took Caleb over to where they’d set up a tarp to use as part of the obstacle course, just to see if he’d go over it for me. He snorted at it when he first saw it, then thought for a minute, and then walked right over for me. What a good boy. The full album of photos from the Field Day are available here, and the second page of that album shows me getting Caleb over that tarp. Mom had taken the camera to catch the fireworks as I tried to get him over, although as it turns out there weren’t any to catch. Not exciting from a photo standpoint, but it makes me very proud of Caleb.
